Spring and summer in the Sunday River region mean longer days, blooming trails, and endless opportunities to enjoy the outdoors—with your pup in tow. Whether you're a weekend visitor or a full-time local, there are plenty of pet-friendly spots to explore together.
Here are some of our favorite warm-weather adventures for dogs and their humans:
🥾 Hike: Step Falls Preserve – Newry
This scenic, dog-friendly hike is a local favorite for a reason. Wide trails lead past stunning cascading falls and shallow pools that are perfect for a mid-hike splash. Dogs are welcome on leash, and spring wildflowers make the views even more beautiful.
🌲 Walk: Bethel Pathway – Bethel
An easy, paved path that winds through Bethel village, along the Androscoggin River, and past open fields. It's ideal for leisurely morning walks, afternoon strolls, or quick outings between errands. You'll find plenty of shady spots and access points to cool off.
☕ Grab a Bite: Gemini Café – Bethel
Located in the heart of downtown Bethel, Gemini is a cozy spot with outdoor seating where dogs are welcome. Enjoy your coffee, smoothie, or seasonal lunch special while your pup lounges by your feet. It's a great stop after a walk or before heading out on your next adventure.
🛶 Explore: Kayak the Androscoggin River
For water-loving dogs (and their humans), kayaking or canoeing along the calm stretches of the Androscoggin is a fun way to cool off and soak in the scenery. Look for spots with easy launch access and don’t forget a doggie life jacket!
🍻 Relax: Steam Mill Brewing – Bethel
After a day outside, kick back on the dog-friendly patio at Steam Mill. You’ll find local brews, live music, and a relaxed vibe where dogs are always welcome. Many weekends, it feels like a dog meet-up!
